Brief Description

Wat Pra Srirattanasasdaram or known as Wat Pra Kaew which means as Emerald Temple is one of the most sacred place of the Thai people and also is one of the most attracted place for tourism in Thailand. The temple was constructed after King Rama I who succeeded the throne moving the capital to the east side of the Chao Praya river. He then ordered the construction of the Grand Palace and having the temple inside the compound for housing the Emerald Buddha and holding royal religious rite. At the period of King Rama V, he commanded painting the well known Asian legend Ramayana on the boundary wall of the temple with total of 178 pictures.

  1. The Emerald Buddha Image: The image was sculpted from one single piece of green color jade which was first found in 1464 A.D. inside a destructed pagoda and was believed being crafted not long before its discovery. It is the most sacred Buddha image for the Thai people. The image will be roped in three different dresses; winter, rainy and summer
  2. The Emerald Buddha Temple: After reigning the kingdom, the King Rama I ordered moving the capital of Thailand from Thonburi, the city situated on the West side of the Chao Praya river, to the city of Bangkok which is located on the East side of the river. In addition, he ordered construction of the Grand palace and the Temple in the same compound to house the Emerald Buddha Image and to hold royal religious rites. The buildings architecture high light Thai style, Western, and some Thai and Chinese sculpted stones.
  3. The painting on the boundary wall of the temple: The painting consists of total 178 picture rooms painted in Thai fined art style continuously. It tells the audients a part of the story of Ramayana legend
  4. The Model of Angkor Wat: The Khmer well known wat has been made miniature model situated in the temple area.
